AV Equipment Guide for Events in Egypt
Audio-visual technology, production standards, and equipment choices for conferences, galas, and live events in Egypt โ from system selection to day-of execution.
Sound Systems for Events
Sound quality is the foundation of every successful event โ poor audio destroys engagement, causes fatigue, and undermines even the most compelling speaker or performance. Event sound design in Egypt benefits from a mature local industry with modern equipment and experienced engineers.
Line array speaker systems are the industry standard for events above 300 delegates. The physics of line arrays โ coherent cylindrical wavefronts that maintain volume level over distance without the severe high-frequency rolloff of point-source systems โ makes them the right choice for long, narrow conference spaces, ballrooms, and outdoor events. Quality touring-grade line array systems available in Egypt include products from d&b audiotechnik, L-Acoustics, and JBL Professional, all of which are stocked by AVE Egypt and other professional suppliers in Cairo.
For smaller conference formats (under 200 delegates), point-source systems are typically more appropriate and cost-effective. A well-deployed cluster of professional full-range speakers with a digital matrix processor can deliver excellent results in standard hotel ballroom acoustics without the complexity of a full line array deployment.
Digital audio consoles โ Yamaha CL/QL series, DiGiCo SD series, and Allen & Heath dLive are all available locally โ allow the audio engineer to manage complex multi-channel mixes with recall and scene automation. This is essential for multi-session conference formats where different programme elements require different audio configurations without lengthy changeovers.
RF wireless microphone systems deserve careful attention in Egypt's RF environment, which has become more congested in major cities. Professional dual-antenna diversity receivers, frequency coordination software, and pre-show RF scans are essential practices. Shure Axient, Sennheiser Evolution Wireless 300 series, and Sony UWP-D systems are all frequency-coordinated and suitable for the Egyptian RF environment. Always deploy a backup wired microphone option for speakers who refuse to use wireless, as a wired fallback prevents live programme disruption.
AVE Egypt Tip
Always request a technical rider from your AV supplier listing the specific speaker systems, amplifiers, and consoles being deployed โ not just generic descriptions like "professional PA system." AVE Egypt provides full equipment lists at proposal stage. Our full audio inventory is detailed at ave-events.com.
LED Video Walls and Projection
The choice between LED video wall and projection is one of the most consequential technical decisions in event production โ it affects budget, aesthetics, ambient light tolerance, and flexibility of content design.
LED video walls have largely replaced large-format projection in high-end event production globally, and Egypt follows this trend. LED walls offer superior brightness (3,000โ10,000 nits versus 800โ1,500 nits for high-end projectors), true-black contrast ratios, and modular scalability that allows any aspect ratio or pixel area. For gala dinners, product launches, and branded events where ambient light cannot be fully controlled, LED video walls are essential. For awards shows, fashion events, and immersive brand experiences, curved or non-standard LED configurations are achievable with pixel pitch 2.5mm and below.
Pixel pitch selection depends on viewing distance. P2.5 (2.5mm pixel pitch) is appropriate for main screens at viewing distances from 4 metres; P3.9 suits distances from 6 metres; P4.8 and above for large scenic backgrounds viewed from 8+ metres. Incorrect pixel pitch selection produces visible pixellation at close range โ a mistake that is immediately obvious and expensive to correct mid-event.
Large-format projection remains the preferred choice for conference sessions where the room needs to remain bright for note-taking and networking, or where the content is primarily text and data rather than video and graphics. A well-positioned 20,000-lumen laser projector onto a quality screen can produce excellent results at significantly lower cost than an equivalent-area LED wall. Laser projectors have largely replaced lamp-based projectors for events โ no lamp replacement risk during the event, consistent brightness, and longer service life.
Content management systems โ media servers including Resolume Avenue, Watchout, and Disguise โ allow complex multi-screen shows with precise timing, transitions, and generative content. AVE Egypt's production team operates several licensed media server systems for shows requiring sophisticated visual programming.
AVE Egypt Tip
For brand-sensitive events, always specify a minimum brightness and viewing distance in your AV brief. This forces suppliers to size the system correctly rather than defaulting to whatever is cheapest. AVE Egypt's LED inventory includes P2.5 and P3.9 panels suitable for all conference and gala formats.
Lighting Design for Events
Lighting transforms spaces. A generic hotel ballroom with poor lighting looks exactly like what it is; the same room with a considered lighting design becomes an immersive environment that supports the event's narrative and elevates the delegate experience.
Event lighting in Egypt falls into three main categories: architectural wash, which colours and textures the venue surfaces; performance and stage lighting, which illuminates speakers, performers, and presentations; and atmospheric and effect lighting, which creates dynamic environments for receptions, dinners, and entertainment.
Moving head fixtures โ Robe MegaPointe, Martin MAC Aura series, and Clay Paky B-EYE โ are the workhorses of modern event lighting, offering beam control, colour mixing, gobos, and dynamic movement in a single fixture. Egypt's professional rental inventory has expanded significantly in the 2020โ2024 period, with most major Cairo and Sharm el-Sheikh suppliers now holding quality European-branded moving heads rather than unbranded Asian equivalents.
LED wash fixtures โ Chauvet Colorado Batten, ETC ColorSource, and similar โ provide efficient, colour-accurate wall washing and ambient fill. For venues with ornate architecture (and Cairo has many), careful warm white LED wash that respects the architecture while adding depth is often more effective than aggressive colour changing.
Lighting control runs on the DMX512 protocol universally, with Ethernet-based ACN/sACN increasingly common for complex shows. MA Lighting grandMA2 and grandMA3 are the industry standard consoles in Egypt's professional market; Avolites and ETC EOS consoles are also available. For events requiring pre-programmed cue-based shows, a grandMA operator with show file preparation time of at least two days is essential.
For outdoor events at night โ Pyramids-side receptions, Nile terrace dinners, desert experiences โ generator-powered wireless battery-operated fixtures increasingly offer the flexibility to light areas where cable runs are impractical or aesthetically undesirable.
AVE Egypt Tip
For outdoor events at the Pyramids or on Nile terraces, battery-powered wireless LED fixtures eliminate the cable runs that damage turf and create trip hazards. Our production team deploys wireless battery fixtures as standard for outdoor gala events.
Rigging and Staging
Rigging and staging form the structural skeleton of any significant event production. Getting them right requires engineering competence, load calculations, venue liaison, and strict safety protocols โ particularly important in Egypt, where the regulatory framework for temporary structures is less prescriptive than Western markets and safety discipline must come from the production team itself.
Traversing truss systems โ typically 290mm or 400mm box truss โ are the standard rigging infrastructure for hanging LED walls, lighting rigs, speaker arrays, and soft goods. Reputable Egyptian production companies use Prolyte, Global Truss, or equivalent certified truss products; avoid suppliers who cannot produce weight-rated certification documents for their structural components.
Rigging points in Egyptian venues vary widely. Purpose-built convention centres (EIEC, COP27-upgraded Sharm properties) have engineered ceiling rigging points rated at 500kgโ1,000kg each with documented load certificates. Hotel ballrooms typically have architectural rigging points rated at 50โ250kg designed for chandeliers and light scenic elements, not full production rigs. For productions requiring substantial fly-in elements at hotel venues, ground-supported towers or custom-designed structural frames are the correct approach โ never exceed venue rigging point ratings.
Staging systems โ Prolyte, StageDex, or equivalent aluminium deck staging โ provide elevated performance platforms, speaker risers, and presenter platforms. Stage height, width, and depth must be specified in relation to the furthest seated delegate: a simple geometry check ensures all delegates can see the stage surface without the first row blocking the view of delegates behind. For large venues, thrust or T-shaped staging configurations improve delegate sight lines significantly.
AVE Egypt's production team is trained in rigging safety assessment and carries public liability insurance covering temporary structure installation. We conduct load calculations and provide documentation for all significant rigging deployments.
AVE Egypt Tip
Always insist on seeing load calculation documentation before signing off any rigging plan in Egypt. Certified truss and rated rigging hardware are non-negotiable โ AVE Egypt carries full certification documentation for all structural components and will share this at pre-production review.
Live Streaming and Hybrid Events
Hybrid events โ combining physical attendees with remote participants watching a live stream โ have become a standard expectation rather than a premium add-on. Egypt's broadband infrastructure in its major international hotel properties and convention centres is now adequate for professional-quality streaming, though redundancy planning remains essential.
A production-quality live stream requires: multi-camera coverage (typically 3โ5 cameras for a conference stage: wide shot, close-up on speaker, audience reaction shot, and presenter screen capture); a vision mixer (Roland V-Series or Blackmagic ATEM for compact setups; full broadcast switchers for complex productions); a graphics system for lower-thirds, name titles, and production branding; a broadcast audio mix separate from the room mix; encoding hardware or software; and reliable internet uplinks.
Internet uplink capacity is the critical variable. Production-quality streaming at 1080p60 requires 6โ10 Mbps stable uplink; 4K streaming doubles this. Hotel internet connections in Egyptian five-star properties typically offer 20โ100 Mbps shared bandwidth โ adequate for standard streams, but vulnerable to contention from other guests. For important streams, a dedicated line leased from a telecom provider (Telecom Egypt, Orange Egypt, or Vodafone Egypt) with a guaranteed Service Level Agreement is strongly recommended. Budget $500โ1,500 for a dedicated 50 Mbps symmetric event circuit in Cairo or Sharm el-Sheikh.
As a contingency, 4G/5G cellular bonding using Teradek, LiveU, or similar systems provides a reliable backup uplink path. Cellular coverage in Cairo and Sharm el-Sheikh is strong enough to support bonded multi-SIM streaming at broadcast quality. AVE Egypt maintains a cellular bonding kit for all major streaming productions.
Streaming platforms โ YouTube Live, Vimeo Event, Zoom Webinar, Microsoft Teams Live Events, or dedicated CDN platforms โ each have different latency, interactivity, and branding characteristics. Platform selection should be driven by the audience's preferred access method, the need for interactivity, and the client's IT security policies.
AVE Egypt Tip
For hybrid events with large remote audiences, book your dedicated internet circuit a minimum of 3 weeks in advance. Last-minute circuit orders rarely achieve the guaranteed speeds needed for broadcast-quality streaming. AVE Egypt handles circuit booking as part of our AV and production service.
Simultaneous Interpretation Systems
Egypt's position as a hub for pan-Arab, African, and international events means simultaneous interpretation infrastructure is well-developed and widely available. Understanding the system options โ and their trade-offs โ ensures planners can match interpretation technology to event scale and budget.
Fixed booth systems are the gold standard for large international conferences with multiple language pairs. Interpretation booths conforming to ISO 4043 standard provide interpreters with acoustic isolation, a clear view of the stage, sufficient working space, and the technical infrastructure to manage incoming and outgoing audio channels. Major convention venues in Egypt have built-in booth installations; smaller venues can accommodate portable booths. A fixed booth system with professional interpreters is the correct choice for any event where interpretation quality is a significant delegate experience factor.
Portable wireless systems โ Bosch Integrus, Shure Microflex Advance, and Televic Confidea are the quality benchmarks available in Egypt โ distribute translated audio wirelessly to receivers worn by delegates. These systems are significantly more flexible than fixed booths: they can be deployed in any room configuration, require minimal installation time, and can be expanded easily. The trade-off is that interpreters work from a less controlled environment (typically a screened-off area at the back of the room rather than a soundproofed booth), which can affect interpretation quality for long or complex sessions.
Language availability in Egypt is concentrated in Arabic, English, and French, which cover the majority of pan-Arab and Francophone African event requirements. Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Chinese interpretation is available through Cairo's interpreter agencies but with a smaller freelancer pool โ book specialist language interpreters at least 4โ6 weeks in advance for major events.
For technical conferences where speaker terminology is specialised, it is standard practice to provide interpreters with glossaries, speaker materials, and pre-event briefings. An interpreter who has reviewed the presentation content will produce significantly better output than one encountering technical vocabulary for the first time live.
AVE Egypt Tip
Send your speaker presentations to interpreters at least 5 business days before the event. Interpreters who have reviewed the content produce measurably better output โ this single step consistently improves delegate satisfaction scores for multi-language conferences.
Power and Infrastructure
Power infrastructure is the invisible foundation of every AV production โ when it fails, the event stops. Egypt's national grid is reliable in the major cities and resort zones, but the power distribution within venues, and the capacity available to event production, requires careful assessment and proactive management.
Egyptian hotels and convention centres supply power from their main distribution boards, typically at 380V three-phase (local standard) through a mixture of Schuko CEE 16A/32A and sometimes UK/US format outlets. International production equipment requiring different voltages or connector formats needs step-down transformers or adapter cables โ this should be confirmed at venue inspection, not on build day.
Power draw calculations must be completed before each event, accounting for: LED wall consumption (typically 400โ800W per square metre at maximum brightness), lighting rig (moving heads draw 300โ600W each when striking), audio amplifier racks (PA systems for 500-person rooms typically draw 3โ8kW), and all ancillary equipment. Over-drawing venue circuits causes breaker trips at the worst possible moment; under-specifying power distribution creates fire risk. A production electrician should review all power plans before build commences.
Generator backup is standard for significant productions in Egypt. Most five-star hotel properties have automatic transfer switchgear (ATS) that switches to diesel generator within 8โ15 seconds of mains failure โ adequate for most applications but problematic for live streaming (stream drops) and sensitive audio (click and noise from transfer). For zero-interruption power requirement, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system bridging the ATS transfer gap is essential.
For outdoor events, portable diesel generators are universally available from Egyptian plant hire companies at competitive rates. Generator selection should be sized at 130โ150% of calculated peak draw to allow for start-up surge currents and headroom. Stage-quality generator silencers reduce noise intrusion at outdoor venues โ important for events near residential areas or where ambient sound is part of the experience.
AVE Egypt Tip
Request a power audit from the venue before finalising your AV specification. Knowing exactly what circuits are available, their ratings, and the location of distribution boards allows your production team to design a power plan that avoids costly surprises on build day.
Choosing Your AV Partner in Egypt
The Egyptian AV and production market spans from individual freelance technicians to full-service production companies with comprehensive equipment inventories. Selecting the right partner involves understanding what you actually need and matching it to a supplier with the genuine capability to deliver it.
For international corporate events, a full-service production company is almost always the correct choice over a patchwork of individual suppliers. Full-service companies provide a single point of accountability, coherent system design where all components are engineered to work together, a crew who are familiar with each other's working methods, and a project manager who is responsible for the whole production rather than just one element of it.
Key questions to ask any Egyptian AV supplier: Do you own your equipment, or do you subcontract? (Subcontracted equipment introduces uncertainty over availability, condition, and service.) Can you provide an itemised technical rider showing exactly what equipment will be deployed? Who is your project manager and what events of comparable scale have they personally managed? What is your approach to contingency โ what spares do you carry on-site, and what is your escalation protocol if equipment fails during the event?
AVE Egypt's production division owns and operates a comprehensive equipment inventory including touring-grade line array systems, LED video wall panels, a moving head lighting rig, digital audio consoles, and full rigging infrastructure. Our crew has experience on events from 50 to 10,000 delegates across Egypt. We act as the production partner for international PCOs who need a single in-country technical contact managing the complete audio-visual scope.
For productions involving equipment brands or specific technical specifications that we do not hold in inventory, we have established relationships with specialist rental houses in Cairo and can source additional equipment with quality and reliability guarantees. We do not use spot-market suppliers โ all our supply chain partners are pre-qualified, regularly audited, and covered under our commercial liability framework.
